“Be good,” Renee said, giving me a kiss on the cheek.

“She’s always good,” Carlisle said. “Isn’t that right baby doll?”

I stood there and smiled at the both of them, fighting the urge to roll my eyes or throw up. They were pathetic. Tonight they were off to another charity event that was sponsored by Carlisle’s company.

Carlisle was my stepfather. He and Renee married two years ago when I was fifteen. Carlisle was thirty-five at the time and my mother thirty-three. She had me young.

I won’t say I wasn’t shocked by their decision to marry, but I knew I could not expect anything else from Renee.

For my whole life, as far back as I can remember, my mother has always been addicted to two things, sex and money, and Carlisle offered her both.

But the two of them together, they didn’t make sense.

They played the part of the perfect couple in public. They were loving, and appeared to be devoted to each other. The society pages could not get enough of them.

But behind closed doors, that was a different story. Long gone was the loving and devoted couple and a disgusting side of the both of them came out.
